Minneapolis Fight Against ICE Inspires Mexican Ballads

Mexican corridos are a narrative genre of music rooted in the 19th century that served as a “newspaper” for the oppressed. Beginning with the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) and later becoming immensely popular during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), corridos recounted tales of heroes and the struggles of everyday life. A number of Mexican songwriters are now turning to this tradition to honor Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, both murdered this month in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

High School Youth Step Forward in Fight Against ICE

Roseville, MN — Wearing black T-shirts and jackets, about 300 students at Maple Grove Senior High School marched towards Fernbrook Lane, congregating at the intersection on Monday.  Chanting, “This is what democracy looks like,” students carried signs reading “Remember Renee Good” and “ICE should be in my latte, not in my streets.” “The heart of the message is to express our need for justice,” said senior Ria de Looze. “Youth voices are so often overlooked, and this is one of our few ways to organize youth in such a powerful way. We really wanted to get the message out and inspire people to keep up the work.”

The truck driver was involved in a tragic 28-vehicle pileup caused by a failure of the brakes in the semi he was driving while descending a mountainous section of the I-70 highway in Lakewood, a suburb of Denver. The April 2019 accident resulted in the death of four people. After a jury found Aguilera guilty last October of four counts of vehicular homicide and 23 other criminal offenses, a judge sentenced him to an incredible 110 years behind bars! The news of such cruel and unusual punishment struck a chord with millions around the world who quickly expressed indignation at the draconian sentence.

Miami Rally: ‘Stop Deportations, Save the Haitians!’

NORTH MIAMI, Florida, September 29, 2021—About fifty people gathered today outside City Hall here to protest the outrageous mistreatment of Haitians by the U.S. government at the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border. Protesters demanded equal treatment for Haitian asylum seekers, and the immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of the nearly 15,000 refugees who were removed from the border by federal authorities and many of them deported.
