In response to Washington’s escalating aggression against Cuba, solidarity groups across the United States have started organizing protests, speak outs, and educational teach-ins to counter U.S. government propaganda and mobilize popular opposition to U.S. warmongering.
The attempts to asphyxiate Cuba and its people, intensifying Washington’s 67-year-old economic war, include:
- The January 29 executive order by U.S. president Donald Trump, declaring a “national emergency” due to the “unusual and extraordinary threat” that Cuba allegedly poses to the United States and announcing the imposition of harsh punitive tariffs on any country that trades oil with Cuba.
- Enforcement of the oil blockade by the U.S. Navy, including the turning back of oil tankers headed to Cuba from Colombia and Russia. Only one Russian oil tanker has been allowed to reach Cuba and deliver petroleum this year.
- Trump’s May 1 executive order, escalating sanctions against Cuba, especially targeting companies and individuals in third countries that do any type of business with the island nation, and signaling — for the first time — that the White House may go after individuals and organizations sending Cuba humanitarian aid.
- The ultimatum by CIA director John Ratcliff publicly delivered in Havana on May 13 on behalf of the Trump administration: “Shut down Russian and Chinese listening posts and take steps to open the economy,” or else.
- The absurd indictment of Raúl Castro, a former president of Cuba, on May 20 by the U.S. Department of Justice on charges of murder and conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens over the downing 30 years ago of two Brothers to the Rescue planes that repeatedly violated Cuban airspace and refused to heed repeated warnings to turn back.
- Bombastic military threats, such as Trump’s May 1 pronouncement that “we will be taking over [Cuba] almost immediately,” after wrapping up the war against Iran. (So far, Iran has stymied the U.S.-Israeli assault, providing Cuba some much-needed breathing space.)
- U.S. military encirclement, including the aircraft carrier Nimitz and its armada of warships entering the southern Caribbean on May 20, and more than 20 U.S. spy flights having been detected off the coast of Cuba from February through May.
- A campaign of lies by the big-business media promoting the escalating imperialist aggression against Cuba and its people.
Despite this concerted campaign by the U.S. establishment, new polls show that 64% of Americans oppose the U.S. government going to war against Cuba, and only 15% support it.
Therefore, now is a critical moment to turn this sentiment into united front actions and mobilize in the streets the majority that opposes Washington’s war moves.
We publish below information about two such actions recently called in Miami and New York City. We encourage the largest possible turnout in each case and the emulation of such solidarity activities across the United States and other countries.
