Protest Actions Set for US Cities as UN Votes

Actions are set for a number of US cities leading up to a vote by the UN General Assembly on a resolution condemning Washington’s criminal blockade of Cuba. The press events, picket lines and marches, and other activities are in response to a call for a Global Week of Action Against U.S. Genocide in Cuba: October 24–31 by the National Network on Cuba.
For the 34th year in a row, the delegates representing countries around the world are likely to vote in favor of the draft resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”
Over the past three decades, previous resolutions have passed with little opposition. Notably, only the United States and Israel have consistently voted “no” on the annual non-binding resolutions.
Last year was an exception. The resolution passed with 165 in favor, but 7 against (United States, Israel, Argentina, Hungary, Paraguay, North Macedonia, and Ukraine) and 12 abstentions. The vote reflected increased pressure from the White House as the Trump administration escalated its 67-year economic war against Cuba.
This year, US secretary of state Marco Rubio has made a concerted effort to step up this pressure ahead of the debate and vote scheduled for October 27-28. A near total blockade of oil to the island has been enforced by Washington, using its sway over the international banking system to prevent financial transactions between Cuba and third countries. In addition, the US government has threatened sanctions against any states that trade with the island nation in not only oil, but medicines, food, and other necessities.
Cuba’s foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla characterized Rubio’s campaign as “blackmail.” Rodríguez posted on X, “Through his repeated lies and new actions, he attempts to silence the act of collective punishment against the Cuban people and turn the rest of the international community into an accomplice to this barbarism.”
In anticipation of the UN vote, multiple events in the United States will call attention to the attempt to starve the Cuban people into accepting Washington’s domination over their affairs and demand “Hands Off Cuba! Lift the Blockade! Solidarity with the Cuban People!” Some of these are highlighted below.
