Trump’s Anti-Somali Bigotry Behind Physical Attack on U.S. Representative
On January 27, 2026, a man attacked U.S. congresswoman Ilhan Omar while she was addressing a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, a city she represents along with a number of its suburbs. The attacker, using a syringe, sprayed Omar with a pungent liquid before he was tackled and taken away by security. The liquid turned out not to be toxic.
There is little doubt that behind this odious assault was the unceasing bigotry and vilification of Omar and the entire Somali American community in Minnesota by U.S. president Donald Trump and much of the Republican Party establishment.

Foreigners coming into the United States, Trump told his audience during a January 27 GOP campaign rally in Iowa, “have to show they can love our country; they have to be proud — not like Ilhan Omar.”
The crowd booed at the mention of the name of the Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota, who Trump has demonized and dehumanized for years with racist attacks based on outright lies.
The president has vented that Omar should “go back” to her country, referring to her as “garbage”; mocking her hijab by calling it a “little turban”; making baseless claims that she became a U.S. citizen fraudulently, after her family moved to this country from Somalia when she was 8 years old, by marrying her brother; and attempting to use her husband’s increased income recently to insinuate she stole public funds to enrich herself after “she left Somalia with NOTHING.”
At a December rally in Pennsylvania, Trump complained that Omar, a Somali-born Muslim woman, “does nothing but bitch.” He added, referring to Somalia, “Why is it we only take people from shithole countries?”
Such torrent of insults can fuel physical violence.
The man who attacked Omar, Anthony Kazmierczak, had expressed on Facebook his support for Trump, Turning Point USA and its former leader Charlie Kirk who was assassinated last year, and Kyle Rittenhouse — the right-wing vigilante who killed two people in Wisconsin during anti-police-brutality protests there in 2020 and was subsequently acquitted in a travesty of justice. Kazmierczak had recently told a neighbor he was going to attend an event where Omar would speak and that he might be arrested.
The assault on Omar unfolded as she was calling for the resignation of homeland security secretary Kristi Noem, a point person of Trump’s anti-immigrant crackdown. Omar’s response to Kazmierczak’s cowardly attack showed her integrity, courage, and grit.
The congresswoman did not cower behind the lectern. She instinctively lunged at her attacker with defiance and a raised fist. The shock from the assault notwithstanding, she quickly composed herself and continued her talk, brushing aside efforts by her staff and security who tried to persuade her to retreat.
“I’m built that way,” Omar said calmly as she left the community room at Urban League Twin Cities after her event, reminding a CNN reporter that she was a survivor of war.
Faced with such racist bullying, Omar showed the value of dignity and determination. All those resisting the Trump-inspired anti-immigrant terror can learn from her conduct. She stood tall and channeled her ire into her message.
Her response was so stoic and disarming that her political adversaries tried to minimize the damage they suffered, as a result of her dignified conduct, by peddling conspiracy theories that the attack had been staged. Omar “probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” Trump claimed incredibly, speaking to ABC News.
She has shown similar grit since she was first elected to Congress in 2018.
In 2023, the House of Representatives voted along party lines to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee over her outspoken opposition to Israeli atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank and to U.S. policies enabling the onslaught of Palestinians. Omar reacted with her typical defiance.
“Take your vote or not — I am here to stay,” Omar said on the House floor at the time. “I am Muslim. I am an immigrant. And interestingly, from Africa. Is anyone surprised that I am being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy?”
World-Outlook has consistently made clear that the Democratic Party, of which Omar is a leader, represents the interests of the exploiting classes in the United States. Defending her against the January 27 assault, and her endless vilification by Trump and most officials in his party, does not signify in any way endorsement of her party’s program or policies.
But in the recent confrontation, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Rep. Omar and the entire Somali community in Minnesota and beyond.
